I have some correspondence with a number of BetAnySports customers. I know poker players who will occasionally indulge themselves at the blackjack table. I know probably more blackjack players who also play poker. Many of them in response to the game’s recent surge in popularity.
But I don’t really know too many people who avidly play both games.
Part of it may be a matter of access – poker might appear much more accessible, more user-friendly, especially since players may not like a version of blackjack that includes a random number generator (RNG).
If you’re new to all this, you may not know which game to go with. Maybe we can help you a little in that regard.
Your quest to be “best”?
Maybe you are not the kind of person who likes to battle the house edge. Maybe you would rather be in a game where the best player at the table has a chance to win all the money. And if that is the case, choose poker. If you frequent a particular poker room, you even have a chance to choose the level of opposition you play against. That changes the dynamic of the game for you, and thus, your chances of winning. In blackjack, on the other hand, the rules are the rules are the rules. If you want to change the dynamic, you’ll probably have to change some aspect of the game, other than your foe.
Blackjack – more straight-ahead
If you’re not looking for a lot of variables that can affect your end result, then online blackjack is better for you. Once again, the rules are the rules. You essentially have a stationary target to aim at in blackjack. In poker, it is completely dependent on factors that change all the time. For instance, who else is at the table, how well you’re able to read them, how well they’re able to read you, how well you are able to “con” another player into going into a pot with a hand that’s not as good as yours, etc., etc., etc. In other words, the target is far from stationary. In fact, it’s moving all the time.
Blackjack – a more exact science
If you prefer more exactitude from a mathematical standpoint, choose blackjack. That’s where there is a card count that reflects the composition of what is remaining to be dealt. It is one single, simple number (unless you’re doing true count conversions, where in that case there is both a running count and a true count). Admittedly, the count can’t be used much online. But in poker, you’re using whatever information is at your disposal, from both a mathematical and psychological perspective. Both are far from an exact science.
Poker gives you volume
If you want as many places as you can possibly play, you should opt for poker. That’s because you can play anywhere, against anyone, because the house has no stake in the matter. In blackjack, you’ve got the random number generator online. That serves to take away potential edges for the player. And rules might be different, depending on what version you’re playing. For example, you may get to play single deck blackjack, but you might get paid just 6-5 on a blackjack (a two-card 21) instead of the customary 3-2.
Poker’s the favorite in the online game
If you harbor any expectations about winning online, you need to gravitate toward poker. Generally when you play blackjack online you are encountering a random shuffling situation after every hand. This has the same effect as the automatic shufflers that are used in physical casinos. Thus, if you’re a card counter, you don’t have an opportunity to gain any “traction.”
In online poker, you may not get to read opponents by detecting physical expressions and movements. But there are still some techniques you can use to determine “tells.” And the basic fundamentals are still the same, in that there is no “house” to battle against. And if you’re the best player at the table, you’re likely to win the most in the long run.
Still haven’t decided yet? Sit tight; we’ll have more.
