The college football betting season is a week away. Before you know it, our weekends will consist of scanning the best USA sportsbooks in an attempt to find the best possible odds offering the most appealing value. But players don’t have to wait until the season is actually here to find a good sportsbook. Rather, the few days we have provide the perfect opportunity to close in on that ideal sportsbook for US players.

Opening day will be this upcoming Saturday, and the NCAA has scheduled four contests for players to sink their teeth into. Specifically, South Florida and San Jose State will kick off the day’s action, followed by a contest between Stanford Cardinal and the Rice Owls. Let’s take a look at what the top USA sportsbooks have to say about these NCAA opening day matchups.

The San Jose Spartans finished the 2016 season with a 4-8 record (3-5 in Mountain West Conference play) that gave way to a three-way tie for third place in the West Division. Their performance was so disappointing that the program decided to part ways with Ron Caragher halfway through the season. Caragher finished his four year tenure with San Jose 19-30. Brent Brennan enters as 1st year head coach and will be looking to start the season off on the right note by picking up a win against a team in which no one is giving them a fighting chance.

In 2016, South Florida turned in an 11-2 record (7-1 in ACC play) that gave way to a 2nd place finish in the East Division. After the regular season was over, head coach Willie Taggart left to pursue another coaching position at Oregon. Charlie Strong enters as 1st year head coach and will be looking for a strong opening day performance.

Picks: The above listed odds come from Intertops, a bookie every sportsbook review agrees is ahead of the competition. Picking South Florida on the money line isn’t going to give fans much value on the pick. On the other hand, while picking San Jose will deliver a much higher payout, it doesn’t seem like the wisest pick. Sure, both programs are coming in with brand new head coaches, but in that case bettors should pick the team with the best talent which in this case would be South Florida by a landslide.

The smartest pick on this game involves the totals line. Usually spread betting gives you your best option, but 20 ½ is too low to really be considered a good bet. Alternatively, a 65 ½ point total seems like your best US sportsbook shot. This is opening day so it stands to reason that both teams will have kinks to work out and will certainly fall short of the 65 ½ point mark.
