Trevor Lawrence
Lawrence has but one loss on his college record. He led the school to a national championship in his true freshman year but failed to get a second in the national title game in 2020. one more year of mental and physical growth and there is no telling what the 2020-21 season might hold for Lawrence.
The only thing that keeps him back from earning the award is the conference where his team plays. The ACC is not what you would call elite or part of the college football upper echelons. Beating the crap out of your opponents week in, week out for a perfect regular season is not that impressive the third time around.
The junior QB is proving why the best sportsbooks for US project him to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has completed 70.7% of his 191 pass attempts, averaging of 9.6 yards per completion. He has thrown 17 touchdown passes and just two picks in six authoritative victories.
Conversely, Lawrence had one of his worst performances of the year recently. He completed 62.8% of his passes for 289 yards, two TDs and one pick in a 47-21 win over Syracuse. Nonetheless, when you look at his legacy, it’ll be quite an upset if he doesn’t get a majority of votes.
Justin Fields
There was no one happier than OSU’s Justin Fields to hear that the Big Ten would see action once again. The junior Georgia transfer had a solid 2019 season. he completed 67.2% of his 354 pass attempts with 41 TD passes and just three picks. Two of those interceptions came in a close 29-23 loss to Clemson in the CFP semifinal.
Fields had a great start to the season in a 52-17 trouncing of Nebraska. He completed 20 of 21 passes for 276 yards, two TDs and no picks. Also rushed for a team-best 54 yards and another TD. He is more of a dual threat than either Lawrence or Jones. That might give him an advantage at the best sportsbooks for US players.
He is definitely worth looking at +400. If Ohio State had beaten Clemson in last year’s CFP semifinal, that might have given Fields the upper hand over Lawrence. that may still factor into this year’s Heisman trophy voting, though.
Mac Jones
Jones’s odds keep getting better every week. But then it is almost obligatory for an Alabama QB to be in the Heisman conversation. Jones is a real danger to Lawrence. He has a higher completion percentage and more passing yards in one fewer game. Moreover, the SEC is then the ACC. The Alabama QB has passed for 380 or more yards in each of his last four games.
