If an online sportsbook betting buddy had told you before the season began that Alex Smith would be leading quarterbacks in fantasy points heading into Week 3’s action, you probably would have slapped that friend silly. No disrespect to Smith, he’s a talented veteran who’s more than capable of leading an offense. But to believe he’d put up better numbers than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, or Derek Carr would have been unthinkable. But that’s our current reality, where Smith is a near flawless quarterback unlike no other – at least for the moment. But things might change after this Sunday’s contest against their AFC West rivals, the San Diego Chargers.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Diego Chargers – Sunday, September 24th
Venue: StubHub Center, Carson
Start Time: 4:25 pm ET
TV Broadcast: CBS
Online Streaming Options: CBS Sports, NFL Game Pass
At first glance, most US sportsbook bettors would be quick to rule out the Chargers this Sunday. San Diego is winless at the moment with their 0-2 record so how could they possibly pose a threat to the team that knocked off the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots? But the fact that this is a rivalry match should be taken into consideration, as well as the fact that the Chiefs will be playing on the road.

Then again, the Chiefs did open up the season by beating Tom Brady and the Patriots in Foxborough – literally the toughest place to edge out a road win in the last decade. So it’s safe to assume that Kansas City will have little difficulty taking on Phillip Rivers and the Chargers in San Diego. Instead, online sportsbook players can expect Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill to have another field day.
US Sportsbook Betting Lines:
Kansas City Chiefs -3 (-120) 47 ½ (-110) -165
San Diego Chargers +3 (EV) 47 ½ (-110) +144
Betting Kansas City
If Alex Smith can keep playing the way he has been these past two weeks, the Chiefs should have little difficulty winning the AFC West and then the AFC right after. Right now Smith is sitting on 5 touchdowns, 619 yards and a 134.1 passer rating. It’s damn near impossible to beat a quarterback with those kinds of numbers. Not one that’s backed up by the Chiefs defense and not one with Kareem Hunt in the backfield. Hunt has been indomitable this season and is leading the entire league in fantasy points. It goes without saying that he is an instrumental part of Kansas City’s offense.
Betting San Diego
The Chargers are 0-2 but they haven’t been blown out yet this season. San Diego lost their Week 1 matchup against the Broncos 24-21 before conceding a 19-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins the following week. The biggest setback San Diego has been suffering is miscommunication on their offense. The Chargers offense seems to be on different pages far too often and their inability to communicate keeps their offense from finding a rhythm.
Best Offshore Sportsbook Bets to Make: The fact that the Chiefs aren’t being favored that heavily makes them a great betting option on the money line this weekend.
