2020 Belmont Stakes Overview

Normally the Belmont Stakes is the longest race of the Triple Crown series at a mile and a half. Known as the “Test of the Champion” this year’s Belmont Stakes will be a mile and an eighth. With COVID-19 flipping the Triple Crown schedule at Best online sportsbooks the handicapping dynamics are challenging. Most Triple Crown seasons have horses with the commonality of past schedules. By contrast for 2020, there are some horses that have run recently. But there are other horses that have had several months off since their last race.

2020 Belmont Stakes Lead Trainers Analysis

Heavy betting favorite Tiz the Law is well trained by Barclay Tagg. Consider that Tagg has passed US sportsbooks wins at the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby. With a win at the Belmont Stakes, he will have wins in each Triple Crown series race.

Todd Pletcher has two entries in the field for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. Pletcher is a seven-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Trainer. The last time for that recognition was 2014. Pletcher ranked third in total earnings among trainers for 2019. He has two career wins at the Kentucky Derby and three more at the Belmont Stakes. Also adding to his impressive resume is a 2019 win in the Breeders Cup classic. Pletcher trained Jungle Runner is a long shot but Pneumatic is a serious contender.

Hall of Famer Steven A. Asmussen is a two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer. Asmussen has two career wins at the Preakness Stakes and a 2016 Belmont Stakes victory. Likewise, Asmussen has two Breeders Cup Classic wins in his career.

In sum Tiz the Law has over $945,000 in earnings. The number eight draw may not be the best but as Tagg said “it could have been worse.” In fact, Tagg has stated that Tiz the Law can best avoid trouble from the eight position. Further, Tagg likes the fact that Tiz the Law has already run successfully at Belmont Park with a Grade 1 win at the Champagne Stakes.

Pletcher thinks that Dr. Post could be “under the radar.” Cause by not running at any of the traditional Kentucky Derby prep races. Which is where horses become well known. Pletcher noted that Dr. Post has performed well at Gulfstream Park.
