Tale of the Fighting Rooster
Although almost nobody expected the Gamecocks to make a Final Four appearance, South Carolina came into this season with great vision and confidence, and a lot of it had to do with the success they enjoyed in the 2015-16 season. Last year, the Gamecocks delivered an impressive 25-9 (11-7 SEC) that gave way to a third-place finish in conference standings. However, South Carolina was unable to translate that regular season success into the postseason, as they got dismissed in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, and failed to get an invite to the Big Dance.
2016-17 South Carolina Gamecocks
This season, the Gamecocks have clawed their way to a 26-20 (12-6 SEC) record that gave way to a 4th-place finish in conference standings. In the SEC Tournament, the Gamecocks were once again eliminated in the quarterfinals. However, South Carolina has been finding plenty of success in this year’s March Madness Tournament.
To kick things off, the Gamecocks teed off against Marquette in the First Round, and handed the Golden Eagles a swift beating 93-73. In the Second Round, South Carolina handed Duke one of the biggest upsets of this year’s tournament, defeating the Blue Devils 88-81. Baylor was the next obstacle South Carolina faced, but the Gamecocks came through with another jaw-dropping upset, sending the Bears home 70-50. South Carolina last took to the court in the Elite Eight, where they faced Florida. Once again, the Gamecocks delivered a devastating upset, sending the Gators packing 77-70.
Why Bet on a Gamecock Upset
Although the online sportsbook odds are ruling them out, there are plenty of reasons to gamble on the Gamecocks. For starters, since more than half the nation is expecting a Bulldog victory, putting even a small amount of money on South Carolina would reap huge rewards on a Gamecock upset.
To help shock the nation, South Carolina will turn to leading point-scorer Sindarius Thornwell, who is putting up 21.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per contest. Thornwell will likely be getting some help from PJ Dozier, who is second in points for the program. Dozier is draining 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per matchup.
