Will we ever see a betting fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr.? If the fight does happen there is no question that Mayweather would be a big favorite at online sportsbooks because it would be a boxing match and not an MMA contest. McGregor is the current UFC champion in the featherweight and lightweight divisions while Mayweather is a retired boxer who is 49-0. Let’s take a look at a potential matchup and what the odds would be at top sportsbooks.

McGregor vs. Mayweather

If these two did end up fighting it probably would be a letdown simply because Mayweather would be staying away from McGregor. UFC president Dana White said it best, “Conor McGregor, if he touches you, you go to sleep. Floyd puts people to sleep too, with his fighting style, not with his hands. Floyd can say what he wants about Conor, but even other fighters have to respect him. He’s special.”

McGregor would love to get a matchup against Mayweather but it seems unlikely. McGregor won’t fight in the UFC until next May at the earliest with a number of potential opponents including Nate Diaz, Jose Aldo and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor said that he would like to fight Mayweather but only if he gets at least $100 million for the fight. “He wants it under boxing rules. He wants a boxing match. He doesn’t want a fight,” McGregor said, “Tell Floyd and Showtime, I’m coming. Tell him to go to them Showtime offices. I want $100 million cash to fight you under boxing rules cause he’s afraid of a real fight.”

Mayweather has not given any indication that he wants to fight McGregor saying it’s time to “move on.” Mayweather has said he has no plans to come out of retirement to face anyone. People have talked about Mayweather fighting Manny Pacquiao in a rematch but Mayweather isn’t biting. “A lot of fighters in the sport of boxing may want to retire, but they have to fight because they have to,” Mayweather said Wednesday. “I don’t have to fight.

Mayweather definitely doesn’t need the money. “I just made $300 million for fighting Pacquiao. I’m OK.” Mayweather said, “Like I said before, I’m happy with my position. Once again, the money don’t make me; I make money. I’m well-off. I make smart moves, and like I said before, I’m happy with where my career has went.”

Odds Would Favor Mayweather

Oddsmakers at online sportsbooks have said that in the unlikely event that McGregor and Mayweather did fight under boxing rules it would be Mayweather listed as a huge favorite, perhaps as high as -2500 at sportsbook online.

The reality is that the UFC isn’t going to let McGregor get into a boxing fight and Mayweather isn’t going to fight under MMA rules. If the fight did happen then Mayweather would win a boxing match as he has far more experience while McGregor would destroy Mayweather in an MMA matchup.
