It’s one of the things that is often discussed about Andy Reid. His teams are customarily very tough to beat when they are coming out of a bye week. Many fans and customers at BetOnline may know this already as the Super Bowl approaches.

We are going back to his days with the Philadelphia Eagles for this, but the pattern has been there over the course of his career. When you have a 27-5 straight-up record coming off a bye week, that is evidence that you are doing something right. And his 21-11 mark against the spread is 65.6%, which is nothing short of outstanding.

This is enough of sampling that it can’t be considered an accident. When you have an extra week to prepare, it’s something of great value to a coach. And when your opponent is not playing in that bye week, you can take the last game footage and data and go to town on it.

Having played the opponent before has to be even more beneficial. At least that’s what we imagine.

Super Bowl 55 (LV) gets underway at 6:30 PM ET at Raymond James Stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be playing this game at home.

At BetOnline, the Chiefs are a favorite:

So how can this pattern of Reid’s manifest itself?

How can this extra time be a positive for the Chiefs?

We would think the defensive approach is not something that needs major overhaul. Except perhaps to figure out a way to contest the tight end spot better than they did last time. That was when Rob Gronkowski had 106 yards, his best game this season.

However, there is a very real problem that has to be adjusted for. Kansas City had already lost right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, a four-time All-Pro, to a back injury after Week 6. And now Eric Fisher, a Pro Bowl left tackle and former #1 pick in the draft, tore his Achilles and is out.

So guard Andrew Wylie has been moved from guard to right tackle, which means Mike Remmers to left tackle. Ten-year veteran Stefan Wisniewski, who had been cut by Pittsburgh, is at one guard. And Nick Allegretti, who is more of a center, will play at the other guard spot.

That’s a lot of shuffling on the offensive line. And this doesn’t seem like an enviable place to be against Tampa Bay’s defensive line, which is one of the best in the business.

Where they can use the Bucs’ approach to their advantage

Whether they are going to be able to establish some kind of running game is debatable. The Bucs have been outstanding against opposition ground attacks all year long. But what these guys CAN do is figure out a way to buy Patrick Mahomes some time to make throws.

What they may have to their advantage to begin with is that Tampa Bay is not likely to blitz a lot. The Bucs blitzed quarterbacks more often than anyone else this season. But they only did that against Mahomes 17% of the time in the first meeting between these teams (a 27-24 KC win).

Mahomes simply burns blitzes. So the Bucs may have to come out of their defensive game and stay back in coverage. This may give this rebuilt offensive line a break. And of course, Mahomes himself helps out by being able to move just about everywhere on his side of the line of scrimmage.

So don’t be surprised if the offensive line didn’t crumble. Reid can do wonders with some extra time.
