Betting Houston Roughnecks

The Roughnecks top the West Division with a 2-0 record. They beat the St. Louis BattleHawks 28-24 on Saturday as 7.5-point home faves, according to the best online sportsbooks. After a 272-yard, four-TD Week 1 debut, starting QB PJ Walker went 20 of 31 for 170 yards, three TDs and one sack. Walker added 27 yards on the ground. Houston was outgained 390 to 238 yards but lost much fewer yards due to penalties. All three of Walker’s scoring passes went to wide receiver Cam Phillips, who posted 54 yards on seven receptions. Defensively, an interception in the fourth quarter helped the ‘Necks secure the win.

We mustn’t forget that former Carolina Panthers defensive end Kona Ealy is currently slumming it with the Roughnecks. “What’s he doing in the XFL?’’ Houston defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell said. “I can’t figure it out.” Well, whaddaya know? Neither can I. “I thank [XFL owner] Vince McMahon for giving me and so many others an opportunity.’’ This is sort of odd, considering Vinnie Mac’s entrance theme is called No Chance in Hell. Guess that means the XFL is at least a notch above hell.

Betting Tampa Bay Vipers

The Vipers – perhaps named after Randy Orton? – have sunk to the bottom of the East Division at 0-2. Tampa Bay has allowed 40 points and scored just 12 in two weeks of play. Moreover, the Vipers have scored just one TD, and it came off of an interception. Speaking of which, QBs Cornelius/Flowers combined for just 172 yards and three picks in a Week 2 9-17 loss. TB entered, per top sportsbooks online, as 2.5-point road favorites against the Seattle Dragons. A team that had an even worse debut than the Vipes.

The ground attack tried to pick up the slack for the ineffective pass offense. Jacques Patrick had 73 yards on 14 carries, and De’Veon Smith had 11 carries for 46 yards. Tampa Bay out yarded Seattle easily, even through the air, but mistakes, penalties, and poor execution did them in. same on defense. Safety Marcelis Branch had 12 tackles and one sack. But committed an unnecessary roughness penalty that prolonged the Dragons’ final scoring drive.

“We have to play better ball on offense. The defense went out and played great. They played great at the end of the day, but we keep getting in the red zone. We have to score. We have to find a way to score. The offense, we have to come together and we have to do better. We have to find a way to score,” Flowers said.

They say two heads are better than one, but three QBs are not better than none. Aaron Murray. Quinton Flowers. Taylor Cornelius. They all seem to be under the impression that the objective of an offensive drive is a field goal. Because that’s all they have to show after two full games of football. As hinted above, a cornerback scored TB’s lone TD this season. That would be Tarvarus McFadden, who’s also slumming it in the XFL after two uneventful seasons in the real league.

Houston Roughnecks vs. Tampa Bay Vipers XFL Pick

The Roughnecks have intercepted four passes and have yet to throw one pick themselves in two games. The Vipers are terrible on offense and the defense can’t keep up through four quarters. Top sportsbooks online are very kind to give Houston just six points here.
