If odds were predictions, legal betting sites foretell that Roadster will win the 2019 Kentucky Derby on May 4th. Additionally, Omaha Beach would place and Game Winner would show. However, users of the best online sportsbooks are well aware that odds-making is not an exact science. Or a science, for that matter. Neither is divination. But that doesn’t stop wannabe horse whisperers from claiming to know who’s going to win the Run of the Roses. Or lose it. As we’ll see below.

Down to business. Let’s start with Sportsline.com’s “resident horse racing guru, Jody Demling.” Demling “absolutely crushed the biggest horse races and predicted nine of the last 14 Preakness winners.” He (or she) also “absolutely crushed this year’s Pegasus World Cup.” If this horse racing guru thing doesn’t pan out, he (or she) can have a second career as a pro wrestler. Jody “The Absolute Crusher” Demling! His (or her) finishing move would be the Crushing Absolution. Anyway. I can’t tell you which horse Demling thinks is going to win the Kentucky Derby. Because in order to find out I would have to join Sportsline.com. And I’m not joining Sportsline.com. I can tell you which horse Demling believes isn’t going to win. Maximum Security, whose odds, per legal betting sites, are +900.

What to expect at the 2019 Kentucky Derby Race

Chicago racing analyst Joe Kristufek begs to differ, though. The self-proclaimed “horse racing ambassador” has Maximum Security winning the Kentucky Derby. Followed by Roadster and Omaha Beach. Brisnet.com marketing director Ed DeRosa favors By My Standards, Improbable, and Tacitus. Transylvania University graduate and handicapper James Scully envisions Omaha Beach winning. As well as Game Winner arriving in second place. And Tacitus reaching the finish line third. TwinSpires.com thoroughbred racing handicapper Scott Shapiro predicts the first three places will belong to Improbable, Game Winner, and Omaha Beach. TwinSpires is the My Bookie.ag of horseracing legal betting sites. And Kentucky Derby.com blogger Kellie Reilly likes Game Winner, Omaha Beach, and Roadster.

Elsewhere we have Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg. He feels Code of Honor will bounce back from the Florida Derby, which the chestnut colt finished in third place. “Code of Honor had no chance coming off the pace in the Florida Derby. There’s enough pace in the Kentucky Derby that it will benefit him,” Goldberg said. On the other hand, Hanky isn’t buying the Roadster hype. Of course, it’s no secret that jockey Mike Smith ditched Roadster for Omaha Beach. Therefore, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Roadster may be overvalued by legal betting sites.

Our Kentucky Derby Prediction

And do I have a prediction? It’s actually more wishful thinking than anything else. I would really like to see it come down to Roadster and Omaha Beach. Precisely because of the Mike Smith storyline. Smith won the 2018 Triple Crown with the Bob Baffert-trained Justify. Baffert also trains Roadster, whom Smith rode very successfully before switching to Omaha Beach. Riding the latter, Smith has already beaten two Baffert horses. And he undoubtedly plans to add Roadster to his list of fallen foes. All of which comes to show that horse racing, like wrestling, needs only a good angle to suddenly become entertaining.
