You don’t have to like the Ohio State Buckeyes, but top sports betting sites do. A lot. In fact, the Buckeyes are massive, 36.5-point home favorites against the Oregon State Beavers. And under normal circumstances, I’d take that bet. However, Ohio State football is not operating under the circumstances under which it has done so for the past six years. According to Christine Brennan of USA Today, Urban Meyer has failed as a human being and as a coach. Hey, you can be a horrible person and still be a damned good football coach. Like Jon Voight in Varsity Blues. But that was a movie. In a movie, James Van Der Beek can go out there and lead a coachless team to victory. In real life, could Dwayne Haskins/Tate Martell lead Ohio State to 30-plus win without ‘Pope’ Urban?
Aqua turbida piscosior est, Peter of Blois wrote to Henry, Bishop of Bayeux in 1170. It’s good fishing in troubled waters. Like the metaphorical waters of Ohio State University. The thing about troubled waters is, though, you can drown in them. There may be no good fishing for the Beavers, but they might just manage to stay afloat. Oregon State is going to need a stout defense in order to remain within that huge spread. And as it turns out, the Beavers’ secondary is finally healing its many wounds. Cornerback Dwayne Williams missed the 2017 season with a knee injury. Safety David Morris missed the entire spring recovering from foot surgery. They are but two of several defensive starters who are ready or almost ready to return.
On offense, Oregon State is scraping the bottom of the barrel at tight end. Tuli Wily-Matagi retired for personal reasons, though I’m more inclined to believe he never existed to begin with. A name like that has gotta be made up. Also, Noah Togiai has been dealing with a foot injury. That leaves Quinn Smith as the only other tight end who has actually played in a game.
The Buckeyes are not exactly coachless. Ryan Day is acting coach. And Urban Meyer could conceivably return to his daily duties between now and September 1. And he better be. Methinks Day may be spoiling the Buckeyes. Like taking them to see Jay-Z and Beyonce. And he probably will be back. According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, there is an “increasing chance” that Meyer keeps his job. He may be a failure as a human being. But ‘Pope’ Urban Meyer seldom fails as a football coach.

Our FREE Prediction: Whether it’s Meyer or Day in the sidelines, Ohio State beating Oregon State is a foregone conclusion. However, JT Barrett most certainly will not be quarterbacking. The Buckeyes former starting QB graduated and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints. The 36.5-point spread just might be a little too farfetched for Ohio State to cover.
