Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers has established himself as one of the best hockey players of all time. He was a No. 1 overall selection (2015), now in his eighth NHL betting season and eyeing a third Hart Memorial (MVP) Trophy. It’s not quite Wayne Gretzky’s total of nine, but it’s quite good.

McDavid is chasing the 150-point plateau this season, becoming the sixth player to accomplish the feat (first since Mario Lemieux [161 points] in the 1995-96 season).

NHL McDavid McNumbers

McDavid, after 72 games, is leading the league in goals (career-high 60), assists (78) and thus in points with 138, the fifth time in his career has led/is leading in scoring. Through this third-week-of-March writing, he had a dozen more goals than David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins and a silly 28 more points than his own linemate, 27-year-old Leon Draisaitl.

He needs 12 points in his final 10 games to reach the magic number of 150, certainty on pace to accomplish just that.

McDavid finished second in last season’s tally to Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

NHL McDavid’s McDate

It’s likely that McDavid will get to 150, considering his average points per game, but when? How about Apr. 5th against the Ducks at Anaheim.

It’s not an easy schedule facing the Oilers. Prior to that Apr. 5th match, Edmonton will have played both the Vegas Golden Knights (currently 94 points) and Los Angeles Kings (92 points( twice each. Those two teams are ahead of the 90-point Oilers in the Pacific Division standings. According to NHL conference odds by BetUS Sportsbook, Edmonton is 9-2 (+450) to win the West.

Over his last six games, McDavid has multiple points in each contest (total of 14).

Against the San Jose Sharks March 20th, there was 28 minutes, 6 seconds of ice time, his second-highest figure of the season. Pencil at least 20 minutes TOI each game.

NHL McDavid’s “McHart?”

It’s likely that McDavid will win that third Hart Trophy MVP award, especially with the Oilers in prime position (despite some tough games) to advance to the playoffs.

If not McDavid, perhaps his aforementioned linemate, Leon Draisaitl. It’s (theoretically) possible the two split votes, but a voter would be bold to put Draisaitl ahead of McDavid on his/her ballot.

The worst thing working against McDavid, though, is there are two players on teams with better team success that are worthy. The Boston Bruins, solid (+375) choices to win the title, as per Stanley Cup odds, have been the league’s best team by far this season, 54-11-5 (113 points) through 70 games. Boston is led by 26-year-old David Pastrnak’s 48 goals and 93 points.

Meanwhile, the always-solid Tampa Bay Lightning are 42-24-6 (90 points) in 72 games. They also have a player making a case in 29-year-old Nikita Kucherov of that Lightning. Kucherov, the Hart winner in 2018-19, is the third to reach 100 points (28 goals, 72 assists) this season.
