Things have not been going well for the New York Jets this season. And as they’ve gotten out very slow from the gate, coach Adam Gase is under fire. Now he’s without his starting quarterback. And the Jets have a date with the Arizona Cardinals, which begins at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands.

Adam Gase in trouble?
Gase was a controversial hire for the Jets, at least in some circles. He had problems toward the end of his tenure in Miami, scapegoating players and losing the locker room. As it was later reported in the Miami press, when the Dolphins were out of the playoff race a couple of seasons ago, they stopped playing for him. That is not the kind of thing that produces a healthy atmosphere.
Gase has brought no “magic potion” to the table. The Jets’ progress was more or less going to be tied to how quickly Sam Darnold could develop. And it hasn’t necessarily worked out well so far. While others in his draft class, like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, are moving into the elite quarterback ranks, Darnold is coming up a little empty.
The Darnold injury
Last week against the Los Angeles Rams, Darnold suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder. He was taken out of the game and then went back in. During this past week, it was determined that it would be better that he not play.
When Darnold missed time with mononucleosis last season, the Jets were left in a precarious position. They eventually had to use Luke Falk behind center, and BetAnySports patrons no doubt noticed that he was unprepared to deal with NFL defenses.
The Super Bowl MVP steps in
Joe Flacco became available in the off-season and the Jets grabbed him. He had not provided any answers in Denver last year. He got injured, and the Broncos had to look to the future. Flacco is coming off neck surgery, but now he’s ready to go.
He’s a veteran of thirteen seasons and 186 games, including the playoffs. And he’s been on the biggest stage, winning the MVP of Super Bowl 47. So it’s a foregone conclusion that he has the requisite experience.
Where he is the polar opposite of Arizona’s Kyler Murray is that he doesn’t move all that well. Flacco has always been a standing target for pass rushers. We have no doubt that he can operate the offense. And he could be a steadying influence. But he’s also rusty and hasn’t worked with this offensive unit very long.
Jets – the rest of the injury story
It would seem to be very important that rookie left tackle Makhi Becton plays. To many observers, he’s been the most impressive player on the team in the early going. But his shoulder probably won’t allow him to play. The other starting tackle, George Fant, has a thumb injury and is iffy. Wide receiver Denel Mims is out. Wide receiver Breshad Perriman won’t likely play. So the Jets will be short on support personnel. But in case you were wondering whatever happened to Le’Veon Bell, his hamstring may permit him to play this Sunday.
Conclusion…
Can the Jets stop Murray? Well, we’re not sure about that, but they can still defend the run. And they might be able to keep this close for a while. It’s kind of hard to imagine at this point that the Jets will find a windfall on the offensive end. We’d lean in the direction of an UNDER here.
