The last we saw from the Denver Broncos, they were smarting from a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. And what was particularly gnawing to fans and media was a non-effort on the part of Teddy Bridgewater to make a tackle. That was when Dariius Slay took a fumble all the way back for a touchdown to ice the 30-13 defeat.

The Broncos are still not out of the playoff race, since each conference has three wild cards. But BetAnySports customers have to wonder whether Bridgewater has lost some of the locker room. We don’t really know that for sure, as they go into their Sunday game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Kickoff is slated for 4:05 PM ET at Mile High.

Denver: What about the balance?

Even though Bridgewater is 69% accurate, the Broncos might want to leave as little in his hands as possible. And they have a ground game that could carry them. Melvin Gordon has found the end zone five times. Rookie Javonte Williams breaks a ton of tackles. Combined, they have run for over 1000 yards.

Chargers: It’s Herbert’s show

Justin Herbert proved to be one of those “NFL-ready” quarterbacks when he came into the league. In fact, it was enough to come away with the Rookie of the Year award. He’s developing just fine, with 66% completions and 22 touchdowns. The interesting thing about him is that he has the league’s highest QB rating on throws that travel at least 20 yards downfield. But he doesn’t do it a whole lot, and might not have much of a chance to do it in this game. More on that in a second.

Here are the numbers….

At BetAnySports, the Chargers are the road favorites in the NFL pointspread odds:

Team SP/RL TOTAL ML
Chargers -2½ ( -125 ) 47 ( -110 ) -160
Broncos +2½ ( +105 ) 47 ( -110 ) +135

Student vs. Teacher

One of the interesting angles on this game involves the relationship between the head coaches. Brandon Staley of the Chargers is a disciple of Vic Fangio, Denver’s coach. Staley worked under Fangio in both Denver and Chicago. Then he took over the Rams’ defense before landing in the other locker room at SoFi Stadium.

So he learned Fangio’s philosophy, which is to play with safeties high in an effort to take away explosive plays, especially on first and second down. Those safeties usually don’t work in run support. So opponents sometimes have a lot of room to run. The Chargers have given up more rushing yards per game than any other team. The Broncos have been stingier. But Denver is the team that will have to be more prepared for a QB who can be dangerous down the field.

In Conclusion

The Broncos should be able to move the ball on the ground. And if you look at the two games these teams played last season, Fangio got wise to what Herbert could do and tailored his defensive approach accordingly. There is a lot the student can still learn from the teacher.

Yes, we thought Bridgewater really dogged it on that play two weeks ago. And we imagine he caught a few lectures about it. The Broncos must account for Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, who together caught all 13 passes thrown their way against Pittsburgh last time out. But we’ll grab Denver and the points at home.
