Last week, the Buffalo Bills played about as well as any team could possibly play. But they may have to play even better than that as they seek to beat the NFL betting playoff odds as an underdog. You see, they’re going up against the Kansas City Chiefs, who have represented the AFC in back-to-back Super Bowls.
This AFC Divisional round game is slated for Sunday night at 6:30 Pm ET. The site is going to be a rather raucous Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Bills’ destruction of New England
Buffalo had a very unique game last weekend. Their dismantling of the New England Patriots was such that they set NFL precedents. The Bills did not have to punt. They did not turn the ball over. They did not yield any sacks. Until Josh Allen took a knee at the end, they scored a touchdown on every possession. And it really wasn’t as close as the 47-17 score indicated.
Josh Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns. He even had 66 rushing yards. This was a rout from the beginning.
The Bills’ win over Kansas City
Buffalo beat the Chiefs in Week 5 of the regular season, by a 38-20 tally. They got 315 yards and three TD’s out of Allen, and were also aided by a pick-six from Micah Hyde. All told, the Bills gained 436 yards of total offense.
The Chiefs have had a resurgence on the defensive end, so it would be quite a challenge for them to duplicate that effort.
The Bills on offense
Buffalo is 11-7, both straight-up and against the spread. Allen didn’t have as good a season this year as he did last, but you can’t argue that he hasn’t been productive. He has thrown 15 interceptions, and obviously that’s not a good thing. But he has also had 4407 passing yards, with 36 of his throws going for touchdowns. The Wyoming grad is no one of those quarterbacks who “scampers.” He’s more like a fullback running with the football. He racked up 763 yards on the ground and led the league with 6.3 yards per carry.
Tight end Dawson Knox has proven to be pretty dangerous around the goal line. Nine of his 49 receptions have gone for touchdowns. And he scored twice against New England last week. Stefon Diggs has ten touchdowns, and he has been targeted 184 times. Devin Singletary plowed his way to 4.6 yards per carry, and he is complemented by Zach Moss (345 yards) in the backfield.
The Bills on defense
Buffalo has glittering defensive numbers. In fact, the case can be made that their stop unit is the best in the NFL.
The evidence? Well, Buffalo is first in points allowed per game. They are first in yards allowed per game. They are #1 defending on third down (allowing 30.8% conversions). They have allowed 56% completions, 5.2 yards per pass attempt and 163 passing yards per game. All of those figures are the best in the league.
If there’s an Achilles heel, it’s what they’ve done defending the run, as they’ve yielded 4.2 yards per carry and 109.8 per game. Frankly, that’s not much of an Achilles heel.
What the Bills have to do
One huge help would be for them to establish a ground attack. Aside from the obvious reasons, it could ignite the play-action game. Josh Allen has had more attempts and yards behind play-action than any quarterback in the NFL.
Allen will also have to beat the blitz, on those occasions when Kansas City comes with it. He has faced 182 blitzes – that is second most in the league.
They also have to prevent Patrick Mahomes from making explosive plays downfield. All of KC’s opponents have tried that, and it may be the best way to keep things “manageable”against Anmdy Reid’s offensive juggernaut.
