Two of the teams that have to be considered at least mildly surprising in the NFC this season according to the best NFL betting sites are the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers. In their respective divisions, there were other teams expected to be – for lack of a better word – dominant. And that simply hasn’t been the case.
Both of these clubs are likely participants in the post-season, so they could meet up again. For now, they will clash on Sunday night at 8:20 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.

How they’ve done so far
San Francisco was the last unbeaten team left in the NFL. They rebounded from a loss to Seattle with a 36-26 win over Arizona. At the moment they are 9-1, but are just one game ahead of Seattle in the NFC West. The Niners have a point spread record of 5-4-1 ATS. And that might be somewhat surprising for a team that has exceeded everybody’s expectations.
But apparently the oddsmaker caught up relatively quickly. The 49ers have played four consecutive games over the total.
Green Bay has responded well to new coach Matt LaFleur, with an 8-2 straight-up record. That leads the NFC North, but by only a half-game over Minnesota. They have outperformed the number to the tune of a 7-3 ATS record. And Aaron Rodgers, who had some things to adjust to when it came to the installation of LaFleur’s new offense, is an MVP candidate.

Revenge for the Niners?
Last year’s game, held on October 15, was a wild one, to say the least. The Packers led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Aaron Rodgers had 405 yards passing, while the Niners had 174 rushing yards. CJ Beathard was in at QB in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. Ultimately Green Bay won 33-30 on a Mason Crosby field goal as time ran out. This may be an opportunity for payback if the 49ers are so inclined.
The Niners’ injury status
George Kittle has sat out the last two games, with injuries to his ankle and knee. And if you listen to coach Kyle Shanahan, it takes a lot to keep him out of a game. This week the All-Pro tight end is listed as questionable. And that is exactly how two ailing wideouts are listed as well. Deebo Samuel and Emmanuel Sanders have been engaged in the practice. So we’re figuring they’ll play.
However, once again they may be without their top running back, as Matt Breida is doubtful. Perhaps that is not so much of a game-changer, as the Niners have other running backs like Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman to pick up the slack. And you better believe they’ll run it; they have done so on about 51% of all snaps.
In conclusion…….
It’s been kind of rare that the Niners have faced a healthy opponent of high caliber. And take note that Green Bay had a bye week after beating Carolina at Lambeau Field. But the Packers don’t have the kind of dominant run game that is going to put Frisco back on its heels.
And San Francisco is right up near the top in a lot of defensive categories. They have allowed the second-fewest yards per drive. And they are the best at forcing three-and-outs (29% of drives). They are the best at preventing scoring in the red zone. No picnic for Rodgers, returning to his home area.
So we are inclined to lay the points with a Niners team that made a real nice comeback against the Cards last week.
