The Seattle Seahawks are in a kind of limbo. And it’s really a team without a quarterback.
Apparently, the situation with Russell Wilson was untenable. What goes on behind the scenes, one can only speculate. So now BetOnline customers will see Wilson in a different uniform after ten seasons on the job. But he doesn’t have to wait too long to “go home again.” He’ll be taking the Denver Broncos into action on Monday night, as they meet the Seahawks at Lumen Field in a game that begins at 8:15 PM ET. This will be televised by ABC and ESPN.
So Wilson is gone. And nobody has really taken his place. Sure, the Seahawks received quarterback Drew Lock in the Wilson trade. But he was never able to establish himself in the Mile High City. And he could not win the job in training camp. Yes, a bout with COVID may have contributed to that, but it shouldn’t have.
Geno Smith will get another chance to start some games. Or at least one. As Wilson was sitting some games out with an injury last year. Smith won once in three outings.
As we came into the opening weekend, Seattle was priced at +600 to have the NFL’s worst record. And Smith was +300 to be the first quarterback to be benched (for a non-injury-related issue).
NFL Monday Night Picks — Broncos are considerable favorites on the road…
In the NFL odds on this game, posted at BetOnline, the Broncos are laying points in what many bettors obviously think will be a triumphant return for Wilson:

NFL Monday Night Picks — Quarterback not the only issue for Seahawks
When Smith drops back, he is going to have to rely on rookies to keep him upright. The Seahawks drafted left tackle Charles Cross in the first round out of Mississippi State and right tackle Abraham Lucas in the third round from Washington State. They’re talented but might take a while to break in.
In between Cross and Lucas, the ‘Hawks took running back Kenneth Walker III out of Michigan State in Round 2. Walker offered huge production in college, with 1636 rush yards and 18 TDs, but he’s injured. So he won’t be teaming up with Rashaad Penny (6.3 ypc last year) just yet.
This defense was 31st against the pass and 28th overall in 2021. And the leadership of linebacker Bobby Wagner was lost as he is now with the Los Angeles Rams. Seattle did a good job, however, in making themselves tough to score on, as they tied for ninth in scoring defense. So you could probably look at that a couple of different ways.
NFL Monday Night Picks — Second effort big in the backfields
If you look at the advanced rushing statistics, you will see that each team has a tailback who runs like a fullback. What we mean by that is, they don’t go down easily.
The aforementioned Penny led the NFL last year with 3.1 yards per carry AFTER contact. That was obviously the big factor that propelled him to the league lead in overall yards per carry among running backs. And Denver’s Javonte Williams was best in the NFL with 31 broken tackles. So these defensive units had better come prepared for a bruise or two.
NFL Monday Night Picks – Broncos vs. Seahawks – In the end…..
We could conceivably take the points with the Seahawks. They’ve got Penny, as we mentioned, and a pair of good wide receivers. But how could we really trust their quarterback? In the three games Smith started, the Seahawks totaled 757 yards.
So even with some weapons, these guys may be challenged to reach the end zone. But you’ve got a defensive staff under Pete Carroll that knows Wilson well. And they’ve had quite a bit of time to prepare. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this as a defensive slugfest, played close to the vest. That lends itself to an UNDER for us.
