Top offshore sportsbooks seen Ben Roethlisberger becoming the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. That would certainly be a first for him, though not so much the best online sportsbooks’ second favorite. Who is none other than the Gronk.

Ben Roethlisberger +250

Big Ben injured his right elbow in Week 2 of last season. The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the next day that Roethlisberger would miss the rest of the season following surgery on his injured elbow. Thus the ‘Berger only played one game and a half of the 2019 season; the first time he has missed more than four regular-season games in his entire career. At the time of his injury and surgery, Roethlisberger vowed not to cut his hair or beard until he could throw “a legit NFL pass” to one of his teammates. On Monday, Big Ben appeared in a video recalling that moment and then seen throwing passes to teammates JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Conner, and Ryan Switzer. Then the video switches to Roethlisberger getting his hair cut and beard trimmed. In some ways, however, all of that raises more questions than it answers.

Rob Gronkowski +450

The Gronk was the 2014 comeback player. According to top offshore sportsbooks, he could join Chad Pennington and Garrison Hearst as a two-time winner. The difference this time around is that Gronkowski is not returning from injury but coming out of retirement. Some things never change, though; Gronk will reunite with Tom Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster. Gronkowski has 79 touchdown receptions, the most ever by a tight end under 30 years old and third overall for any player younger than 30. One can only wonder how many more he would have scored if he wasn’t made out of fine china. Now we have to add retirement rust to his injury proneness, although on the other hand he is still young and big.

JJ Watt +500

The three-time defensive player of the year shoulda, coulda, woulda been the 2018 comeback player had it not been for that meddling kid Andrew Luck. But now he has another chance thanks to a torn pectoral cutting his 2019 regular season short halfway through. Watt has been an integral part of the Houston Texans defense since the end of his rookie season of 2011. He and Whitney ‘Ming the Merciless’ Mercilus are two of the few defenders that have carte blanche to make plays outside of the called defense. “J.J. playing the full 16-plus is obviously critical for our defense,” defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said. “When he is on the field, he draws an incredible amount of attention from an offense. Then, obviously, he’s going to be impactful and make plays. Him being out there is obviously huge for our defense.”

AJ Green, Nick Foles +600

Bengals wide receiver Green missed six regular-season games in 2016, seven in 2018, and all of them in 2019. When healthy, he has never received for fewer than 1000 yards per season. An inventive offense, promising new quarterback and a wide array of other weapons have top offshore sportsbooks expecting great things from Green. Meanwhile, Foles has gone from Super Bowl-winning deluxe backup to underwhelming starting QB for an underwhelming team to presumably taking over from Mitch Trubisky in Chicago. Talk about a rollercoaster ride.

Our Pick:

Roethlisberger is the only one here for whom injuries have not been a career constant and who isn’t a lifelong second-stringer. If he returns at his 2018 level, when he led the NFL in attempts, completions, and passing yards, he should blow all other comeback hopefuls right out of the water. If.
