Okay, so we know that Greg Norman’s LIV Golf has shaken up the sport. And that included the reception they got in Portland for their second event.
There were some protestors. There was extra security and police on hand at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. Also there was a lot of noise about a local boy who was run over and killed by a Saudi national. And how that Saudi national may well have been harbored and brought back to his homeland in safety by the Saudi government.
The same government has authorized the finds to support the LIV series.
But as we move back onto the course this coming week for the 2022 British Open, the bigger question is whether their players are going to make an impact.
We know that there are some “name” people here; in fact, some of them have won the Open before. But many of them have struggled of late when it comes to performing at the majors.
Until they start doing better, or LIV signs players who can place higher in majors, the new organization may have to withstand a bit of criticism. Of an aesthetic nature.
Let’s take a look at some of the LIV-connected competitors and what their odds are, as they’re listed at BetOnline (odds subject too change, of course):

British Open Dustin Johnson +3300
– DJ has a Masters and U.S. Open win to his credit, and tied for the runner-up spot at the British Open in 2011. But in his last seven majors, he has just one top ten finish, with three cuts. The top ten was at last year’s Brit Open.
Brooks Koepka +3300
– A winner of two PGA titles and two U.S. Opens, those victories came within a period of eight majors, making him perhaps the hottest golfer on the planet. And in his defense, he had three top tens in four majors last year. But his 2022 slate has not been as productive, with injuries playing a part. In both the PGA and U.S.Open, he took 55th. And he missed the cuts at the Masters.
Louis Oosthuizen +4000
– He won the 2010 British Open in just his third major (at St. Andrews, and by seven strokes). And he’s come close to glory since then, with six runner-up finishes in majors. In 2022, he withdrew from the Masters, tied for 60th at the PGA and missed the cut at the U.S. Open. But last year he was in the top three in three of the four major championships, including this one (T-3).
Bryson DeChambeau +8000
— His status as “The Next Big Thing” didn’t last very long. After his victory at the 2020 U.S.Open, he failed to place among the top 25 at a major. In four British Opens, he’s had a T-33, T-51 and two cuts.
Abraham Ancer +9000
— Ancer is a top 20 player and a nice “get” for LIV, but he hasn’t been in many major tournaments. He has finished in the top ten in the last two PGA’s, however. At the British, not so successful, with two missed cuts and a tie for 59th in his three starts.
British Open Patrick Reed +11000
— The affable (no,we’re just kidding) Reed won the Masters in 2018. But his last six majors have not been friendly to him, as he’s had nothing in the top 15. He did crack the top ten in the British Open once (2019), although he missed the cut last year.
