Super Bowl LVII Game Analysis

The Kansas City Chiefs are making their third Super Bowl appearance in the past four seasons. Not many NFL teams can claim that achievement. The first team to make the Super Bowl three times in a four-season span was the Miami Dolphins in the early 1970s, followed by the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys in the late 1970s.

The Buffalo Bills remain the only team to reach four consecutive Super Bowls. The New England Patriots made three straight Super Bowls, but then the Chiefs began their run in the 2019 NFL season. Here they are again in the big game, trying to win a second Lombardi Trophy in four seasons and the franchise’s third Super Bowl overall. Standing in their way are the Philadelphia Eagles, who won the Super Bowl five seasons ago over the Patriots and have completely remade themselves under quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Injuries Report

Injuries will have an important place in shaping this game. The line opened last Sunday with the Eagles being 2.5-point favorites, but subsequent news reports on Patrick Mahomes’ ankle feeling relatively good – meaning that Mahomes should have improved mobility for the Super Bowl – has pushed the line in Kansas City’s direction. The line has moved down one point from 2.5 to 1.5 points for the Eagles. Early money is coming in on the Chiefs.

Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs’ fast receiver, got hurt in the AFC Championship Game win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He and a few other Chiefs who got injured (or aggravated previously existing injuries) against the Bengals will be monitored closely. The benefit for the Chiefs is that the two-week break between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl gives their injured players more time to recover.

The Eagles have the advantage of being mentally fresh heading into the Super Bowl. They crushed the New York Giants in the divisional round. They hammered the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on a day when San Francisco QB Brock Purdy got injured. The Eagles enjoyed a mismatch once the Purdy injury occurred. They did not have to open up their playbook, take risks, or overextend their starters in these two games.

They have not had a stressful run, unlike the Chiefs, who sweated out the injury to Mahomes and won two very tough, close playoff games. Kansas City could be emotionally drained, even though it has two full weeks between games heading into the Super Bowl.
These and other intriguing plot lines make this Super Bowl very hard to predict. The odds reflect how evenly split the public is on which team is likely to win the game.

Super Bowl LVII Prop Bets

The most obvious prop bet is who will win MVP of the game? This one seems pretty simple, since the two quarterbacks are both MVP candidates. Mahomes is favored to win NFL MVP, and Hurts is likely to finish second. The interesting subplot here is if a receiver has any chance of pulling a shocker here and winning the award. Could it be Travis Kelce of the Chiefs? Could it be DeVonta Smith of the Eagles? Those might be the only men capable of taking the MVP award away from the quarterbacks, Mahomes (KC) and Hurts (Philadelphia).
