2021 was a busy year for the film industry with so many flicks originally scheduled for 2020 pushed to last year. Leading the way in total noms is Netflix’s western “The Power of the Dog” with 10. Denis Villeneuve’s bloated epic “Dune” follows with nine.

It appears as if we could be in for a first-ever Academy Award won by a Netlfix film with “The Power of the Dog”. That is the big favorite in Oscar odds at the best betting sites a little more than a month ahead of the Oscars ceremony.
Jane Campion’s western drama has already won the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama, and is sure to be a big winner this season even if it doesn’t get Best Picture. What with nominations in 10 categories, such as Best Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and two Best Supporting Actor nominees.
Other than “The Power of the Dog,” there are a few intriguing and viable options like Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “West Side Story,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and “King Richard” with Will Smith.
All three of those movies probably would have been much bigger hits were it not for the pandemic putting a damper on box office profits across the industry. As it is, all three seem relatively unfamiliar by the moviegoing public despite their starpower and name actors.
Those box office issues could be another reason that this might be the year a Netflix movie takes home the night’s top award. We’re putting our money on “The Power of the Dog” to keep its momentum through the award season. However, don’t sleep on “West Side Story,”. This is a musical with a long and successful history at the Oscars. Well, the original version, at least.
The 94th Academy Awards Preview
The 94th Academy Awards ceremony is presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). It will honor the best films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021. Scheduled to occur at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, on March 27, 2022. It will be hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall.
Shortlists of movies competing for nominations in ten categories were announced on December 21, 2021. The nominations were announced on February 8, 2022, delivered by actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan. This will be the first time since the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011 where the ceremony will feature several hosts.
The Power of the Dog is the first film helmed by a woman to get more than ten nominations. Its director, Jane Campion, is the first woman to get more than one Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
