That stretch run at Churchill Downs made Rich Strike the second-longest priced winner of that race at 80/1. He was angled in from a wide draw following the start and trailed at the back of the field before he made his move at the top of the backstretch.
Jockey Sonny Leon took many risks. He first went outside. He then moved inside to find a gap on the rail from where he did rally, getting up close to the wire. It is worth a look at the overhead view of the race. He did not become hampered nor did he balk like some of his other foes. He may find it much harder this time around even with a smaller field.
Mo Donegal +225 (9/4)
The favorite of top sportsbooks online finished fifth behind Rich Strike at Churchill. We have to look at his run quite closely. The Wood Memorial winner did have a great draw but he bobbled at the start and became hampered early prior to jockey Irad Ortiz riding hard to get a position coming out of the clubhouse turn.
He did settle near the rear on the inside of Rich Strike but he had to go wide in the six lane to launch his stretch run effort together with sixth-placed Barber Road. Those two did get into a bumping match.
Mo Donegal did close very late. He may be deemed an unlucky loser. It’s worth noting that he did mow down Preakness winner Early Voting late in the Wood Memorial.
Creative Minister +650 (13/2)
We have picked out Creative Minister as a horse with potential. He ran a mighty Preakness and finished in the show position in only his fourth career start. He did break much better there. Even though he did make a bid at the top of the stretch, both Early Voting and Epicenter were much too speedy over the shorter distance. The stretch out to a mile1/2 in the Belmont should fit the son of Creative Cause. He’ll be a difficult foe for Rich Strike as well as the others.
We The People +350 (7/2)
He does look like the second favorite at top sportsbooks online behind Mo Donegal. He won wire to wire in the Peter Pan over 1⅛ miles at Belmont. That showing gained a 103 Beyer speed figure. That is the best in the race and at possible odds of +400 (4/1) this son of Constitution could be the one that is on the speed.
His Beyer figure lets us know that he is good but he has not yet been in this deep. It does remain to be seen whether he can mix it with some of these tested Grade 1 performers.
Pick: The best form in the race is that of Rich Strike, though the way the Kentucky Derby unfolded meant that Mo Donegal had a much harder run through to the stretch. Considering that he is the only horse to have beaten Early Voting, he gets the nod.
