Sites for betting in the NFL favor the Tennessee Titans by two points. And that is, according to Sporting News, just the start of another crappy season for the Miami Dolphins. “We’re not going to pretend the Dolphins can compete in the AFC,” they write. Or the NFL as a whole, for that matter. Head coach Adam Gase’s choice of starting QB doesn’t make one overconfident about the Dolphins’ chances, either. After all, Ryan Tannehill has not played a regular season game since 2016. Sort of like Andrew Luck in the Colts. But is Tannehill as good as Luck? No such luck. Then again, Gase’s other options are Bryce Petty, Brock Osweiler, and David Fales. I would pick the guy who hasn’t played in a year, too. Better the devil you know, I guess.
Titans starting QB Marcus Mariota is not without his detractors. He took out some of his frustrations with the press on The Tennessean’s Erik ‘Burt’ Bacharach. “Midway through practice, an errant Mariota throw connected directly with my right leg,” Bacharach wrote. “There’s some bloodied marks where the laces hit, which is kind of cool.” He added that it was an “errant” ball. Errant. Yeah, right. There’s something in that mug that makes one want to throw blunt objects at it. Anyway. The takeaway here is that Mariota is putting some extra oomph in his throws.
That notwithstanding, it’s not his arm but his knee that should concern fans. Actually, that shouldn’t be a concern either. Mariota has been practicing without a brace. Which means that the Dolphins need to brace themselves for Mariota. “To have the opportunity to go out there and get reps physically, it’s so pivotal for me,” he said. “You know, I’m definitely a reps guy. I’m definitely a mental guy, so when I’m out there, and I get the opportunity to practice, it means the world to me, and I think that being healthy has just given me that opportunity.” A physically and mentally fit Mariota is bad news for opposing defenses.
And speaking of defenses, the Dolphins. According to the Palm Beach Post, this year’s stands to be the best Miami defense in Gase’s three-season tenure. “I’m really just happy with the way they’re working,” defense coordinator Matt Burke said. “We’ve really stressed in terms of getting to the ball and everybody chasing and putting that high level of effort on tape. So, that’s really been the starting point for what we’re trying to do. That’s been good and we’ll go from there.” The newest member of that defense is rookie Minkah Fitzpatrick. “In the NFL secondary, there’s not a lot of people that can do what I do, honestly,” he said. Hey, it ain’t bragging if you can back it up. We’ll just have to wait and see if he can put his money where his mouth is.
