As we approach the NFL Draft betting, perhaps there is no team that has as much “buzz” around it as the Miami Dolphins. And that is because things haven’t necessarily turned out the way the front office expected.

Management made a conscious decision to unload assets. The hope was that they could stockpile draft picks and build salary cap space. Well, they have done both of those things. But the team rallied to win five games under first-year head coach Brian Flores. So instead of getting the first or second overall draft pick, they wound up at #5.

BetAnySports customers are undoubtedly wondering what they are ultimately going to do with that #5 selection. Here’s the thing – they have three picks in the first round. And that gives them some capital with which to deal.

Is a trade in the works?

The general consensus as far as the “rumor mill” is concerned is that Miami Dolphins will be looking to trade a pick. But it’s their second first-round pick – the #18 overall – in an effort to land an offensive lineman. As far as the #5 pick is concerned, they’ll be looking for a quarterback. That much is known. But will they get the guy they need?

The talk at the outset was that they were very hot on Tua Tagovailoa. But you’d have to understand if they have some hesitation about it, because the guy has gotten hurt to many times.

Is Justin Herbert someone they like enough to use that pick on? And maybe an even better question is whether they like him better than Tua. That, of course, assumes both of them are available at that point.

If you were betting one of the NFL Draft props at BetAnySports, Tua is -130 to be the SECOND quarterback taken (after Joe Burrow, of course) and Herbert is -110. Odds are subject to change, of course.

But what if neither QB is available?

Cincinnati will take Burrow, almost without question. But the Redskins, Lions and Giants are absolutely listening to offers. And that bothers the Dolphins a little, because they have been working themselves into a lather. You see, if they don’t have a quarterback at the end of the day they are going to feel rather unfulfilled.

The fact is, there are a lot of options at their disposal. Yes, with 14 picks in this draft, they can dangle quite a bit in front of Washington, Detroit or the Giants. But at the same time,  are they better off moving up, or actually using high draft picks to gather more picks. That’s what Jimmy Johnson liked to do. As some scouts would say, they need “a lot of personnel.”

That might bring them to Utah State’s Jordan Love (+930 at BetAnySports to be third QB drafted). If they like him, that is. And that would allow them to fill some holes that they need to fill….badly.

Ground work could be a priority

No one can figure out how this team won five games last season. Except that they hitched themselves to Ryan Fitzpatrick and took an emotional ride with him. They ranked low in a lot of metrics, and that included the ability to run the ball. They have signed Jordan Howard, who has been a 1000-yard rusher and Pro Bowl performer while at Chicago. Then he got lost in a way in Philadelphia. With their third pick in the first round, Miami could take aim at a back.

Which back might be available? Well, it’s hard to say. But it would appear the first back off the board is going to be D’Andre Swift of Georgia.  At BetAnySports, he is -245 to be the first running back drafted. There are two running backs who have had 2000-yard season from Big Ten schools who could still be out there in the latter stages of the first round.

We’re talking about Johnathan Taylor of Wisconsin (+210 to be first RB drafted). And also JK Dobbins of Ohio State (priced at +1250 to go first and quite possibly available in Round 2). It would be greatly helpful if the Dolphins could develop a threatening ground game. Last season they had one of the worst in NFL history. And this serves a dual purpose, as whichever QB they draft could use all the support they can get.
