The truth is, if it weren’t for the team that shares the stadium with them, the New York Giants might be the consensus pick as the worst team in the entire NFL. Even in a set of circumstances that should have given them a certain edge, they stumbled and fumbled. They couldn’t defend. They couldn’t execute. And they appear to have lost some hope. Well, at least their fans have. But what about BetOnline customers? They have to evaluate the Giants’ chances as they travel to the West Coast for a game against the Los Angeles Rams that begins at 4:05 PM ET on Sunday at the new SoFi Stadium.

Last week’s fiasco for the boys in blue

The San Francisco 49ers came into MetLife Stadium with ten starters out of action. Many of them were hurt against the Jets, also at MetLife, the week before. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was worried about the safety risk of the new turf at the stadium. In fact, he was concerned enough to bench George Kittle,  who was otherwise ready to play.

The Giants, including first-year coach Joe Judge, expressed that they have never experienced any problems with the turf. And they proceeded to go out there and become as accommodating as possible to the Niners. The Giants laid down in every way possible, registering just 231 total yards. And it’s a real horse race as to who is progressing more slowly – Daniel Jones or his New York, New Jersey and Fairfield County counterpart, Sam Darnold.

How many games has Jones played? He has already fumbled the ball twenty times. Woody Hayes once explained that good things don’t usually happen when you fumble the ball. Didn’t he? Well, unless you can pull off some kind of “Fumble-rooski” play. Maybe the Giants should try that next.

Here are the numbers…..

In the NFL betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetOnline, the Rams are the huge favorites.

The Giants – more perspective

The Niners have three running backs who generally rotate for them. Well, Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman were already out of action. And Jerick McKinnon got hurt against the Giants. Yet San Francisco had three different players who scored rushing touchdowns. They didn’t have to punt in a game for the first time in 17 years. And they allowed Nick Mullens, pressed into service when Jimmy Garoppolo was injured last week, to throw for 343 yards.

A tale of two running games

The Giants were admittedly put into a rough position when Saquon Barkley was lost for the season to a torn ACL. But Judge and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett (yup, the former Dallas coach) have to work through it somehow. They had to put Wayne Gallman into the lineup last week. He joined Dion Lewis, who was known more for his receiving skills in New England. Devonta Freeman, the former Atlanta Pro Bowl back, was signed and had ten yards on five carries. And now Alfred Morris, a former 1000-yard rusher, has been brough aboard. The Giants will have to piece things together.

On the other hand, the Rams started camp with a healthy offensive line. That has made a difference. Darrell Handerson (5.7 yards a carry) is running the ball well. Malcolm Brown is running it pretty well. The Rams may yet get more contributions from second-round pick Cam Akers. They have run the ball 54% of the time. They have set up their play-action passing game. And life has been good for jared Goff, who has 70% completions and a league-high 9.6 yards an attempt.

Conclusion

Fundamentally this is no contest. The Giants don’t even look like they’re capable of an inspired effort. Especially as they have to drag themselves across the country. The Rams look like a team that is able to carry out an offensive game plan. Not crazy about laying this many points, but if it’s an “either / or,” we would side with the motivated, healthy team that is in sync. That isn’t the Giants.
