It’s been a season that has been filled with distractions off the field. Amidst that, wouldn’t it be quite a story if the Washington Commanders knocked off the last unbeaten team in the NFL?
Yeah, it would.
But a different team would have to show up than the one that met the Philadelphia Eagles on September 25. On that date, the Commanders managed just 240 yards of offense in a 24-8 defeat. And with an opportunity to face their former quarterback, Carson Wentz, the Eagles registered nine sacks. And Wentz has held below five yards in an attempt. The fun part for Philly fans was that the Birds didn’t even have to run the ball to win. They had only 72 rushing yards on the day.
Well, Wentz will be spared further punishment, as he is sitting out with a broken finger. He can’t return until November 20. And by that time, Washington may be without much hope in the playoff race. That may bring rookie Sam Howell into the picture.
Right now, it’s Taylor Heinicke at the helm for the Commanders. And he will lead them into action at Franklin Financial Field at 8:15 PM ET for Monday Night Football.
Heinicke took over when Wentz hurt his finger. But obviously, he’s no stranger to the job. When Ryan Fitzpatrick got hurt last year, he quarterbacked the team almost the whole way. He’s completed 63% of his passes.
The Commanders are 4-5 straight-up and 4-4-1 against the point spread. The Eagles stand alone as an unbeaten team at 8-0. And they are 5-3 versus the number.

Monday Night NFL Betting – About the Eagles
The Eagles are rushing for only eight yards per game less than they did last season. They ran the ball about 50% of the time last year, and that percentage led the league. This year they are only fifth in that statistical category. But they have still run 51.2% of the time.
The difference with the Eagles is that they are throwing the ball with a lot more effectiveness. And for that, you have to give credit to Jalen Hurts, who not only worked with the coaching staff but also has responded to the acquisition of AJ Brown. The former Titan is averaging 16.7 yards per reception. And he is one of three Eagles receivers with at least 40 catches. One of them, DeVonta Smith, had 169 yards in the previous meeting with the Commanders. Hurts has 2042 passing yards and also 326 on the ground.
Only one team has held Philadelphia to less than 24 points thus far.
Monday Night NFL Betting – About the Commanders
BetAnySports patrons know all about the controversies surrounding Commanders owner Dan Snyder. An investigation of sexual harassment in the workplace has been ongoing. And Snyder may be looking to sell under pressure. Also, the D.C. attorney general’s office has sued Snyder and the NFL. In response, the team issued a statement criticizing the AG’s office for all the violence around the nation’s capital and the fact that they hadn’t made progress in the investigation of the drive-by shooting of running back Brian Robinson. Reportedly, the players are upset that Robinson was used as a pawn in that way.
One thing everybody can agree on is that Washington’s offense lacks explosiveness. In only one of the last seven games have they scored more than 17 points. And it’s not as if the Commanders are playing defense the way they were a couple of seasons ago. They are only middle-of-the-road. And they have forced only seven turnovers.
Heinicke generally takes a lot of time to get the ball off. His snap-to-release time of 2.96 per dropback is one of the highest in the league. And it;s bad news against an opponent that scored nine sacks in the first meeting.
Monday Night NFL Betting – Our conclusion
The Eagles have forced more turnovers than any other team in the NFL (18). And they have turned it over the fewest number of times (three). That’s a pretty difficult combination to beat. So let’s agree that unless Philly comes out flat the way they did against Houston last week, they are not likely to have their winning streak stopped.
But Washington has won three of four games. And they have allowed an average of 286 yards over the last three. In other words, they have figured out a way to hang around. Here’s an interesting thing to know as we move forward – the Eagles have allowed 5.2 yards per rush attempt. That might help Washington shorten the game.
Under the circumstances, an UNDER wouldn’t be completely out of order.
