Chiefs torch Cards in opener
If last week was any indication, any fear that the Kansas City Chiefs wouldn’t be the same after losing my receiver Tyreek Hill has been overblown. The Kansas City Chiefs authored an extremely dominant performance at the Arizona Cardinals, winning by a count of 44-21. Kansas City. having put together one of the more impressive offensive efforts in the first week of the season, look to build upon against the Los Angeles Chargers.
It’s no surprise that the Chiefs had much of their success via the passing game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 362 yards and five touchdowns. Reliable tight end Travis Kelce led with 121 receiving yards and a touchdown, chemistry between Mahomes and Kelce is already in midseason form. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught two touchdowns, with the versatility in the backfield vital for the Chiefs throughout the season.
However, injuries hit Kansas City in the win. The Chiefs currently have five players on the injury report, notably Harrison Butker, the kicker. Butker departed the game against Arizona for a bit, forcing safety Justin Reed to kick in his place. Reed did boot one of two extra points in relief. Butker did return in the game, but still questionable. The Chiefs could also miss wide receiver Juju Smith Schuster, offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr, and cornerback Trent McDuffie who are also all listed as questionable.
Kansas City is priced at +750 to win the title, according to Super Bowl odds.
Chargers also won opener
The Los Angeles Chargers came away from their opener against the Las Vegas Raiders with a 24-19 win at home. LA managed to hold off a Raiders’ late surge, securing both the win and cover. It wasn’t as dominant as the win by KC, but the Chargers looked quite impressive.
Quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 279 yards (three touchdowns), propelling the Chargers to a victory. LA will need to do more in the run. Austin Ekeler finished with only 36 yards rushing.
LA doesn’t have as many injuries at this writing as Kansas City. Leading receiver Keenan Allen is probably out with an injured hamstring. The Chargers have a great wide receiver room, but there’s no replacing Allen’s production. LA will also be missing cornerback J.C. Jackson as well.
Chiefs in offensive thriller
This game is pairing two of the prolific offenses in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs proved last week that they’re the best offense in the league, and nothing Thursday figures to change that. This will come down to whether the Chiefs can block edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Even if the offensive line doesn’t consistently, quarterback Patrick Mahomes can make magic with the weapons at his disposal.
The pick is the Kansas City Chiefs -4½. LA’s still a team looking to complete its construction, just missing the playoffs last season. The Chiefs are a well-oiled machine, and they can score three or four touchdowns in a matter of minutes. With these great offenses, take the over (54½) on total points as well.
