Carlos Alcaraz (+130)
Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite at the best online sportsbooks. As he entered Wimbledon, a lot of people did not think that Carlos Alcaraz would be ready to go toe to toe with Novak Djokovic on a grass court (those people included Novak himself) because of Alcaraz’s lack of experience on that surface.
But after he beat Djokovic, who is a 23-time Grand Slam winner, at a competition where he had been virtually unbeatable, Alcaraz could become the bane of Djokovic’s career on all surfaces as we move forward.
Keeping that in mind, and barring a dip in form that would be unlikely for Alcaraz in the ensuing days, it is very hard to see last year’s US Open winner not making it to this year’s final, and Djokovic may very well be the one who will stand in his way and keep him from scoring his third major championship.
Alcaraz has been night unstoppable in this year. He boasts a 47-4 overall record (a 10-1 record on hard surfaces) with 6 titles. That includes a hard surface title win at Indian Wells in March. If we look at Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, the 20-year-old will be entering the summer hard court season with the ATP’s top surface-adjusted rating on hard surfaces, just barely edging out Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic (+150)
Novak Djokovic may have been taken down a peg at Wimbledon, but it would be foolhardy to label this a passing of the torch just yet. In a 5-set final that had many ebbs and flows, Alcaraz finally held off Djokovic 168-166 in total points.
If a few key moments had gone Djokovic’s way, we could be staring at a wholly different story. But even accounting for that loss, let us remember that Djokovic is this year’s Australian Open as well as French Open champion.
Moreover, his run at Roland Garros featured a semifinal win against Alcaraz. Even though it’s worth noting that Alcaraz experienced cramps in that loss, he also admitted that he was nervous and that was a major factor.
With the attention on him as the current reigning US Open champeen, he could be under much more pressure in this event as compared to Wimbledon. If nothing else, the rise of a new rival could motivate Djokovic even more in his search for more Grand Slam titles. Should we see these two clash again in the final, it could be another five-set nailbiter.
US Open Daniil Medvedev (+600)
If anyone is going to ruin the prospect of an Alcaraz vs. Djokovic final, it has got to be the 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. There is no doubt that this is Medvedev’s favorite surface. He has a 75 percent winning percentage on hard surfaces.
Additionally, 18 of his 20 titles have been on that surface. On top of his US Open title, he was also the runner-up here in 2019. He has been a finalist in two Australian Opens, too.
In spite of having a 5-9 record versus Novak, Medvedev is the only tennis player who has beat him on a hard court in 2023. His US Open championship was at the expense of Djokovic in the final of that year. Medvedev has gone 1-2 against Alcaraz, but he has not won a set over Carlos in two matches in 2023.
